What is HDU foam and why is it used for routed signs?
HDU (High Density Urethane) is a rigid, paintable foam that machines cleanly to crisp detail. It's far more stable than wood (no warping, cracking, or rotting), lighter than aluminum, and holds fine routed detail for years outdoors. It's the industry standard for exterior dimensional sign panels.
What is cut-through aluminum?
Cut-through aluminum (also called open-face aluminum) is when letters, logos, or shapes are CNC-cut all the way through an aluminum or ACM panel. The openings allow light, greenery, or a backing color to show through the design, creating a bold visual contrast and an architectural quality.
Can routed signs be illuminated?
Yes — and the best-looking approach is a routed face on an illuminated cabinet. We route your letters and logo out of an aluminum or ACM face and back the openings with acrylic, so when the cabinet lights up at night, only the letters glow. It's a crisp, high-end look that reads beautifully day and night. Cut-through aluminum panels can also be backlit for a dramatic halo effect.
How long do routed HDU signs last outdoors?
Properly primed and painted HDU signs last up to 10+ years outdoors, and can be repainted to extend their life beyond that. The material doesn't absorb moisture, so it doesn't warp or crack seasonally the way wood does.
